Roofing Felt Calculator

Work out how many rolls of shed felt you need for an apex or pent roof. Choose the roof type and roll size, enter the roof length and slope width, and press Calculate to see the rolls, the lengths to cut, the ridge strip and the felt nails.

Type Of Roof

Roll Size

Shed felt rolls are 1 m wide. Laps of 75 mm and 50 mm overhangs are allowed for.

Roof Measurements

m

Along the eaves, from one gable end of the roof boards to the other.

m

Measured up the roof boards, from the eaves edge to the ridge.

For shed felt on sheds and garden buildings. Follow the felt maker's instructions.

How To Use The Roofing Felt Calculator

  1. Choose the roof: an apex roof with two slopes and a ridge, or a pent roof with one slope.
  2. Choose the roll size: 10 m or 8 m long, both 1 m wide.
  3. Enter the roof length along the eaves and the slope width from the eaves up to the ridge, in metres.
  4. Press Calculate Felt.

You get the rolls to buy, the number of strips on each slope, the lengths to cut, the ridge strip, the felt left over and the number of felt nails. A drawing shows the strips on the roof, a table compares the two roll sizes, and you can copy the result or save it as a PDF.

How Much Roofing Felt Do I Need?

Shed felt is laid in strips that run along the roof, from one gable to the other, starting at the eaves and lapping up the slope. Work it out in three steps:

  1. Length of each strip: the roof length plus 50 mm overhang at each gable.
  2. Strips per slope: the slope width plus 50 mm at the eaves, covered by 1 m strips that each lap 75 mm over the one below, so each extra strip adds 925 mm.
  3. Rolls: work out how many whole strips each roll gives, then divide the strips by that and round up. Add one more strip for the ridge on an apex roof.

Strips per slope = 1 + (slope + 0.05 − 1) ÷ 0.925, rounded up

Working in whole strips rather than square metres matters, because offcuts from the end of a roll are usually too short for another strip.

Measuring A Shed Roof

  • Roof length: measure along the eaves from the outside edge of the roof boards at one gable to the other. Shed sizes in feet usually refer to the floor, and the roof is a little bigger.
  • Slope width: measure up the roof boards from the eaves edge to the ridge on an apex roof, or from front to back on a pent roof. Measure along the slope, not across the floor.

If you only know the floor size and the pitch, the slope of an apex roof is about half the width divided by the cosine of the pitch, plus the eaves overhang. Our roof pitch calculator gives the slope length from the rise and span.

A 10 m roll covers just under 10 m² once the laps are taken off. Makers such as IKO recommend 75 mm laps and 50 mm overhangs at the gables, which is what the calculator uses.

How To Felt A Shed Roof

  1. Remove any old felt and nails, and replace rotten boards. Pick a dry, mild day so the felt lies flat.
  2. Cut the strips to length and let them relax flat for a while.
  3. Lay the first strip at the eaves with a 50 mm overhang. Nail along the hidden top edge, about every 500 mm.
  4. Lay the next strip above it, lapping 75 mm over the first, with felt adhesive in the lap, and nail the lap every 50 mm.
  5. On an apex roof, felt both slopes up to the ridge, then cover the ridge with a 300 mm wide strip dressed 150 mm down each side.
  6. Fold the overhangs round the gables and eaves, nail every 50 mm, and fit fascia or trim boards to protect the edges.

Nails, Adhesive And Trims

  • Felt nails: 13 mm galvanised large-head clout nails, longer if the roof boards are thick. The calculator counts nails at 50 mm along every lap and edge and 500 mm along the hidden top edges.
  • Felt adhesive: brushed into the laps and under the ridge strip to stop wind lifting the felt.
  • Trims: timber fascia and barge boards at the eaves and gables hold the edges down and look neater.

Other Roofing Options

Shed felt is made for pitched roofs on sheds and garden buildings, usually 20° or steeper. For a flatter roof, or a garage, workshop or garden office you want to last, look at torch-on felt, EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass. Felt shingles, onduline sheets and metal sheets are other choices for pitched outbuilding roofs. For the timber roof itself, our rafter length calculator and plywood sheet calculator work out the rafters and roof boards.

Worked Examples

8 × 6 ft apex shed, roof 2.6 m long with slopes of 1.1 m:

  • Strip length: 2.6 + 0.1 = 2.7 m. Slope: 1.1 + 0.05 = 1.15 m, so 2 strips each side.
  • 4 strips plus 1 ridge strip = 5 lengths of 2.7 m. A 10 m roll gives 3, so 2 rolls.

8 × 6 ft pent shed, roof 2.6 m long with a 1.9 m slope:

  • Slope: 1.9 + 0.1 = 2.0 m, so 3 strips. 3 lengths of 2.7 m from 1 roll, with 1.9 m left over.

How The Calculator Works

The calculator adds 50 mm at each gable to the roof length to get the length of each strip. It adds 50 mm at the eaves to the slope width, and on a pent roof 50 mm more to fold over the back. The number of strips is one for the first metre and one more for every 925 mm after that, because each 1 m strip laps 75 mm. An apex roof has two slopes and one extra length for the 300 mm ridge strip. Each roll gives as many whole strips as fit along it; if the roof is longer than a roll, strips are joined with a 150 mm lap. Nails are counted at 50 mm centres along the eaves, gables, laps and ridge, and 500 mm along the top edge of each strip.

Roofing Felt FAQs

How much felt do I need for an 8 × 6 shed?

About 2 rolls of 10 m × 1 m felt for an apex roof, and 1 roll for a pent roof, depending on the overhangs.

How much does a roll of shed felt cover?

A 10 m × 1 m roll covers up to 10 m², a little less once the 75 mm laps are allowed for.

How much should roofing felt overlap?

Felt makers recommend 75 mm laps between strips and 50 mm overhangs at the gables and eaves.

Which way do I lay shed felt?

Along the length of the roof, starting at the eaves and working up, so each strip laps over the one below and water runs off.

What nails do I use for shed felt?

13 mm galvanised large-head felt nails, at about 50 mm along laps and edges.

Do I need adhesive as well as nails?

Felt adhesive in the laps and under the ridge strip stops wind and rain getting under the felt.

Can I use shed felt on a flat roof?

It is made for pitched roofs. A flat roof needs torch-on felt, EPDM or GRP.

How long does shed felt last?

Standard felt typically lasts several years, and polyester felt longer, depending on exposure and how well it was fitted.
